How to delete duplicate and similar photos on Android
Most phones fill up with the same picture taken five times. You press the shutter again "just in case", a burst fires, or the same photo arrives twice from a chat. Each copy takes full space.
This guide shows how to find those copies and clear them safely.
Duplicates and similar photos are not the same
It helps to know what you are looking for:
- Exact duplicates are byte-for-byte copies: the same file saved twice, or a photo downloaded again from a chat or cloud backup. Deleting all but one loses nothing.
- Similar photos are different shots of the same moment, usually taken seconds apart. They look almost the same, but one is usually sharper, or someone has their eyes open. You want to keep the best one.
Treating both the same is how people delete the wrong photo. Duplicates can go without a second look; similar photos need a quick choice.
The manual way
You can do this with your gallery app alone:
- Open the gallery and switch to the timeline view, so photos are in the order they were taken.
- Zoom out until you see whole days. Bursts and repeats show up as runs of near-identical thumbnails.
- Open the first photo of a run and swipe through it. Note the sharpest one.
- Select the others and delete them.
This works, but it is slow for thousands of photos, and it is easy to miss exact copies that were saved months apart.
The faster way: let an app group them
Photo Cleaner looks through your gallery on your phone and groups photos for you:
- Similar photos taken seconds apart are put in groups, and the sharpest one in each group is suggested to keep. You can switch to any other photo.
- Duplicate photos that are exact copies are listed separately.
- You can choose how alike photos must be to count as similar: strict, normal or loose.
Before you delete anything, you see how much space each group frees. Nothing is deleted on its own, and all analysis happens on your phone, so photos are never uploaded.
Why free space doesn't go up right away
After deleting, many people check storage and see no change. That is because Android keeps deleted photos in Recently Deleted (or the trash) for about 30 days, so you can restore them.
To get the space back now:
- Open your gallery's Recently Deleted or Trash.
- Check that nothing you need is in there.
- Choose Empty or Delete all.
Tips to keep it from piling up again
- Clean up once a month. A month of photos takes a few minutes; a year takes an afternoon.
- Delete old screenshots. Most were only needed for a day.
- Look at chat photos. Photos saved from messengers are often copies of photos you already have.
