How to free up storage on Android without deleting what matters

Updated

"Storage almost full" usually shows up at the worst time — right before you need to take a photo or install an update. The good news: most of the space is taken by a few things, and you can clear them without losing anything you care about.

Step 1: See what is taking the space

Open Settings › Storage (on some phones, Settings › Battery and device care › Storage). You will see space split into categories such as images, videos, apps, audio and documents.

On most phones, images and videos are the biggest by far. That is where to start.

Step 2: Photos — clear repeats, not memories

Photo libraries fill up with things you never meant to keep:

Clearing these frees a lot of space and you lose nothing, because you keep the best shot of each moment.

Photo Cleaner finds these for you on your phone and shows how much space each group frees before you delete anything. It suggests the sharpest photo to keep in each group of similar shots, and nothing is deleted on its own.

Step 3: Videos — a few files, a lot of space

One minute of 4K video can take several hundred megabytes. A handful of long videos can take more space than thousands of photos.

Step 4: Shrink the photos you keep

Photos you keep can still be stored more efficiently. Shrinking saves the same photo as a smaller file: the picture looks the same on a phone screen, and the resolution, date and location stay as they are. Photo Cleaner lets you choose high, standard or low quality and compare the result with the original before anything changes.

Step 5: Chat downloads and app cache

Step 6: Empty the trash

Deleted photos go to Recently Deleted (or the gallery trash) and keep using space for about 30 days. Once you are sure, empty it — that is when the space actually comes back.
