How to do a card stunt with phones — turn a crowd into one giant screen
A card stunt is when a whole section of the crowd holds up colored cards at the same time to form a picture or words. With phones, you can do the same thing — and it moves: waves, hearts, fireworks, words that scroll across the crowd.
How a phone card stunt works
Every phone is one pixel of a big picture. For it to work:
- Each phone needs to know where it is in the crowd — which row, which seat.
- Every phone needs to share the same clock, so they change color at exactly the same moment.
- Each phone shows its own small part of the picture at each moment.
The picture is designed for the people watching — usually the stage — so words need to be flipped to read correctly from the front.
How many people do you need?
- 25–50 phones: simple shapes, colors and waves.
- 100–300 phones: hearts, short words, clear patterns.
- 1,000+ phones: detailed pictures and longer words.
More phones mean a sharper picture, but even a small group can do a stadium-style wave.
Doing it with LED Banner's Crowd Show
Crowd Show in LED Banner handles the hard parts:
- 11 show effects — stadium wave, ripples, hearts, words, fireworks — that you line up into a show.
- From 25 to 1,000+ people. Just set the number of lines and people per line.
- Join with one QR code. No app yet? The phone camera leads to the install. Everyone who joins can show the QR to the next seat, so it spreads down the row.
- Each person picks "line from the front, place from the left", and all phones move together on a shared clock.
- Words are flipped automatically so they read correctly from the stage.
- Schedule the start time. Once joined, it keeps going even if the internet drops — useful in packed venues.
Planning checklist
- Agree on rows and seats before the day. A simple seat map in your group chat avoids confusion.
- Pick one organizer who sets up the show and shares the QR.
- Brightness all the way up, screen-always-on, and charged phones.
- Rehearse with a few friends in a room — even 4×4 phones show whether the effect works.
- Check the venue rules. Most venues are fine with phone lights, but it's worth checking for organized events.
